Esther Melton is a national award winning watercolor artist.  In her still life compositions, color is important in enhancing the design and emotional impact of the paintings.  She carefully chooses the most transparent paints to achieve the illusion of sunlight streaming through the everyday objects she uses in her paintings.  Although her paintings are realistic, she enhances the values, shapes, and color of her reference objects in order to enrich the emotional, aesthetic, and design aspect of each work.   This helps connect the viewer to the energy and emotions of each painting.

Recent projects include:

Esther was awarded the honor of “2003 South Carolina Artist of the Year” by S.C. Ducks Unlimited.  Esther painted a landscape of a S.C. project site which was used to print the “S.C. Ducks Unlimited 2003 Print of the Year”.

In August 2003, Esther was awarded a commission for the “EdVenture Children’s Museum” to execute a painting on a steel bench which will serve as a functional piece of art for the new children’s museum.

In 2002, Esther participated in the public art project called “Connecting the Past to the Future” which involved artists making art from steel doors salvaged from a public housing community called Saxon Homes.  This project was sponsored by the Richland and Lexington Cultural Council and raised money for the arts in these counties.  Esther’s door was painted with architectural details from the historic “ Palmetto Building ” located on Washington and Main Street in downtown Columbia and is currently displayed on Main Street in downtown Columbia .

Three of Esther’s paintings will be published in a book titled “Splash 8: Watermedia Discoveries” by North Light Books which will be in bookstores in October, 2004.

Esther served as a member of the Board of Directors of the South Carolina Watercolor Society for 2001-2002.  She is a member of the Southern Watercolor Society, the South Carolina Watercolor Society, Trenholm Artists Guild, and a Juried Member of Watercolor West.

Esther has attended classes and workshops instructed by Anne Hightower-Patterson, William Powers, Robert Mills, and Harry Hansen.   Prior to 2000, she was employed as a Computer Resource Consultant for the SC Department of Social Services for ten years.  She lives with her husband and four year old son in Blythewood , S.C.
